New
Dry Hydrant on Lakeview Ave at Newton Lake
In the beginning
of the summer, Greenfield set a goal of updating the Dry Hydrant
at Newtown Lake. On Sunday, October 19, the original unit, which
was installed in 1988, was replaced with a brand new hydrant,
which when tested, was capable of flowing almost 1,700 gallons
per minute.
A "Dry
Hydrant" is a connection installed into a water source, such
as Newton Lake, so fire departments can remove water from it more
efficiently. You may have noticed several of these throughout
the community.
The installation
process required two Greenfield Divers to brave the 50-degree
water to help set the hydrant strainer on the bottom. While the
water temperature was brisk, the 40-degree air temperature made
for a chilling return to dry land for the divers.
